The National Refuge of Caño Negro is one of the greatest birding hotspots in Costa Rica.
Located on the north side of Costa Rica, this place has to be on your
roadmap.
Why? Because is an easy destination in Costa Rica where to spot birds.
It is easy to reach from La Fortuna – Arenal Volcano, from Bijagua – Tenorio Volcano (Rio Celeste), from Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí. Driving your car for a couple of hours and you are there.
It is easy to take a tour and enjoy birding and wildlife all the time because all the tours are by boat. You do not have to walk around, just focus on spotting birds, caimans, monkeys, iguanas, sloths, basilisks,s, and so on.

Starting around December, when the water level drop and the migration begin, The National Refuge of Caño Negro receive a document of migrating birds, such as Yellowlegs and Sandpipers. Also, we receive the visit of Blacknacked Stilt, Woordsorks, Jabirú, Rosate spoonbill, Southern Lapwing, and warblers, just to mention a few species.
