It has never occurred to my wife and me, that we would own a birding agency in Costa Rica – Monteverde, and get settled in Central America from Italy and the USA. And yet here we are, one turn after another, fate brought Renzo from Italy to Costa Rica first, then Grace from the States. Eventually, we landed ourselves at this little oasis in Monteverde which we thought would be the best place to raise a family and starts our business. After several years of work in the Hotel industry, we decided to open a birdwatching agency to help our guests to choose the best places in Costa Rica.

  • What are the popular birds in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is a small country with a land area of 51,060 km2 (smaller than West Virginia). Caño Negro is a great birding hotspot in Costa Rica

But it is a bird-rich neotropical region with a large number of species for its area. We have a higher density of bird species than any continental American country.

According to the Asociación Ornitológica de Costa Rica (AOCR, which published the official bird list of the Costa Rican Rare Birds and Records Committee) we have 922 species. This number is higher than has been recorded in all of the 49 mainland United States and Canada combined.

    This birding list includes:

    • seven endemic species
    • 69 that are rare or accidental
    • and four have been introduced by humans.

73 of them are near-endemic with ranges that include only Costa Rica and Panama. Twenty-seven species, including five of the seven endemics, are globally vulnerable or endangered.

Nearly 600 species are residents, with most of the other regular visitors being winter migrants from North America.

  • Where is the best bird watching in Costa Rica?

We can say every-where, we can name some places. But to be honest, it is a matter of bird choice.
My advice is to find not touristic places, even when you are visiting some tourist zone. The more tourists you encounter, the fewer birds you will see.

Caño Negro wetland is a very interesting place to discover. It is a great birding hotspot in Costa Rica. We united a few ecosystems in one region. Here you can find wetlands, forests, swamps, rivers and creeks, lagoon.

Because of this peculiar environment, you will have the advantage to observe shorebirds, forest birds, night birds.

Along the year, with two different seasons also we encounter different birds species. For example, during the dry season, we can see more shorebirds like the glossy ibis, roseate spoonbill, limpkin, Lapwing and plovers, Stilt, Sandpipers. Meanwhile, during the rainy season, we are exploring more often the forest along the river, such as the bellbird, cotinga, Ovenbirds and woodcreepers, woodpeckers, Trogons, Hawks, and kites.

  • What are some of the iconic birds where you live?

It is hard to say. As a personal preference, those are the 3 birds that I always enjoy when I see them: The Jabirú, the Agami Heron, and the Sungrebe.
Around Caño Negro National Refuge, during a bad day, you can probably spot around 50 species of birds during a 3 hours boat tour. But we also reach during a perfect morning 99 species in 4 hours.

In this wetland we find a lot of great birding hotspot in Costa Rica.

  • What should I do when I travel to Costa Rica?

If nature and relaxing is your passion, you should visit the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge.
Here at Hotel de Campo, just in front of the lagoon, is the perfect place to join nature and relax.
Enjoy a gorgeous nature lover environment during a private boat tour along the Rio Frio River, discovering the forest area, or contemplating a beautiful sunset on the lagoon.
Remember to bring a good book, good binoculars and your camera, because you will have all the time for yourself.

  • Where is the best place to travel to Costa Rica?

It is a tricky question. Well, it depends on what your hobbies are.
    Photography? Nature? Birding? Relax?
If one or more of those activities are on your list, of course, I have to advise you to visit Caño Negro, and stay at Hotel de Campo.
Caño Negro is all about nature, photography, birding, relaxing, time to read a book or write a blog.

In Caño Negro you can find a lot of great birding hotspot in Costa Rica.

Hotel de Campo is the place where you can enjoy for sure your preferred hobby. It is just in front of the lagoon, surrounded by an extensive botanical garden, with a nice refreshing swimming pool.
And when it is time to visit the exuberant nature of Caño Negro wetland, I will ensure that you will not find a tourist around. It is pure nature.

  • Which destinations would be the best for bird watching?

Let's be honest. I would not use the "best" word to describe Caño Negro National Refuge but for sure one of the greatest birding escape you can find in Costa Rica.
For my personal taste, I like to visit a destination where I do not find a lot of tourists. This is not what I looking for during a vacation.
I am looking for birds, quietness, relax, photography, monkeys, slots, and perhaps the luck to spot a jaguar.
I have all this all year long because I live in Caño Negro.
I advise this place because I would like to share with you what I enjoy every day.
I invite you to visit Caño Negro, where you can stay at the Hotel de Campo.
