Greatest Turtles in Costa Rica. Feeding time and dealing with a caiman

Caño Negro Refuge is a birding hotspot in Costa Rica, but Cano Negro refuge is not only about birding. Of course, all other species of animals are around. Animals that are “easy” to spot are monkeys, such as the Spider monkey, the White face capuchin monkey, and the howler monkey. Then we have basilisk (yes, that one you see on the discovery channel running over the water, also known as the Jesus Crist), caimans, a few crocodiles (very shy by the way), and the Greatest Turtles in Costa Rica.

At the National Wildlife Refuge of Caño Negro we do have 5 kinds of freshwater Greatest Turtles in Costa Rica.

The White-lipped mud Turtle (Kinosternon Leucostomum)

The Black wood Turtle (Rhinoclemmys funerea)

The Brown wood Turtle (Rhinoclemmys annulata)

The Common slider turtle (Trachemys scripta)

And the almost impossible to see the Common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina)

The most common Turtles in Costa Rica we will spot in Caño Negro Refuge is the Common slider turtle (Trachemys scripta), and the White-lipped mud Turtle (Kinosternon Leucostomum).

They swim in the river, they rest in the water close to the bank and they love to sunbathe over old trees in the river and along the riverside.

Because the National Refuge of Caño Negro is a wetland, with large flooded areas such as swamps, forests, and more, turtles prefer to hide just inside forests and swamps. Even so, it is possible to spot a few turtles in the river over branches.

They are very shy reptiles. So be aware to spot them from the far.

During a boat tour in Caño Negro, for sure will be possible to spot turtles.
